Since Lincoln Museum closed the doors to its archaeology displays in October, the learning team have been busy relocating replica Roman armour, Anglo-Saxon skeletons (plastic of course!) and even a Viking style market stall to Lincoln Castle.
Lincoln Museum will now undergo a complete refresh of the main archaeology gallery, updating all the displays, and creating a new, immersive experience that showcases Lincolnshire’s history, right back to its very earliest inhabitants.
The exhibition spaces are now closed to allow staff to begin removing all the objects and artefacts for safe storage. This will pave the way for work to start on transforming the space.
A refit of the museum shop, refurbishment of the play space, and landscaping of the outdoor courtyard will also form part of the project. The museum’s Muse Café and the Usher Gallery will both remain open as normal.
In the meantime, we will be running our ever popular Roman and Early Medieval workshops from their new temporary home at Lincoln Castle. You can take part in all your favourite activities such as the Roman Army drills, Viking shopping, and mini archaeological digs.
We’ve also introduced new elements to our Investigations, taking advantage of the fantastic finds from archaeological digs at the Castle site. Hear the fascinating story of how the remains of an Early Medieval church and skeletons were found beside the castle walls and see the amazing sarcophagus that was discovered in its floor. Or walk the Norman walls that stand on the site of the Roman fort, looking across Lindum Colonia, before you view the Roman artefacts that were uncovered below.

We look forward to welcoming you to Lincoln Castle!
