This workshop has been relocated to Lincoln Castle whilst Lincoln Museum undergoes a large-scale refurbishment of the archaeology displays.

In the first century, the Romans created the city where Lincoln now stands – Lindum Colonia. Evidence from the 9th and 2nd Legions, as well as a wealth of artefacts from civilian life have been unearthed across the County. Lincoln Castle itself sits upon the remains of part of upper Lindum Colonia and a number of objects were discovered here during excavations in 2013.

Choose two activities for a part day workshop, or three activities for a full day experience:

• Roman Investigation – Explore the Castle grounds and discover the Roman history of the site from fortification to colonia. View the Roman finds from the 2013 excavation and handle real and replica artefacts.
• Digging the Romans – Work in teams to excavate, research and record Roman finds in a mini dig.
• Life in the Roman Army – Handle replica Roman armour and weapons whilst learning how Roman soldiers were recruited and trained. Then put your new knowledge into practice with some Roman drills and manoeuvres.
• Visit Roman Posterngate – A guided visit to the underground remains of the south wall and gateway of Lindum Colonia. Please note the remains are situated near to Lincoln city centre (a 15-20 minute walk) and are only accessible via a staircase. Ask the Learning Team for more information about including this in your visit.
