Ages: 5 to 8 | 7 to 11
Lincoln Castle, Castle Hill, Lincoln LN1 3AA
For 2024-25 this workshop will be relocated to Lincoln Castle whilst Lincoln Museum undergoes a large-scale refurbishment of the archaeology displays.
The Early Medieval period saw both Anglo-Saxon and Viking settlers come to Lincolnshire. Each left behind exciting and often mysterious clues to how they lived and what beliefs they held. Our workshops and investigations will help you to ask questions and start to piece together information from the evidence we have.
Workshop options:
- Early Medieval Investigation – visit the sarcophagus discovered in the remains of an Anglo-Saxon church on the site of Lincoln Castle, and handle real and replica artefacts from the Early Medieval period.
- Digging the Early Medieval – work in teams to excavate, research and record Early Medieval finds in a mini dig.
- Life in Viking Lincoln – Investigate Viking clothing and the materials and techniques used to make them. Learn how to haggle like a Viking and spend replica coins at the market stall.
- Uncovering the Anglo-Saxons – Recreate two furnished pagan graves and see how they can help us to understand people of the past.
Full Day Includes: Early Medieval Investigation, Digging the Early Medieval and a choice of Life in Viking Lincoln or Uncovering the Anglo-Saxons.
Part Day includes: Choice of two activities.
