Roman Posterngate tours for schools
The learning team regularly offer public tours of the Posterngate, providing a chance to venture below ground to discover the Roman remains.
Now we are pleased to offer a visit to the Posterngate for schools and groups booked on our Roman workshops. You can swap an activity from our Romans full or part day workshop for a Posterngate tour so your class can experience the archaeology for themselves.
What was the Posterngate?
The Posterngate was a small pedestrian gateway in the southern wall of Lindum Colonia. In Roman times the River Witham would have been far wider and reached very close to the walls, so the gateway was ideal for merchants to bring their goods into the town.
What can be seen today?
Two large sections of the wall that surrounded the town are visible; these still stand at a height of around 5 feet. The remains of the base of a tower can be seen, and the original Roman flagstones of the road. Although the archway of the Posterngate has not survived, you can still see the groove on the floor, worn by the door opening and closing centuries ago.
