In the David P J Ross Magna Carta Vault at Lincoln Castle is one of the four original copies of Magna Carta from 1215 and one of only two copies of the Charter of the Forest of 1217.

Our Magna Carta workshops set the historical context for these important charters and explore the decisions that King John faced at the time.

We also explore the widespread effects of Magna Carta and the 1217 Battle of Lincoln.

Our workshop sessions include the following:

• Castle Bailey and Wall Tour – Oversee the locations of the 1217 Battle of Lincoln from the Castle walls. Learn about the key players and the battle’s impact on the Castle’s subsequent architecture. Please note the Medieval Wall Walk is partially open while essential repairs take place – temporary access is not suitable for wheelchair users. Content will be delivered from the walls and ground.
• Medieval Charters – Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest – View the famous historic documents and enjoy the cinematic experience. Explore the implications of these famous documents and their significance at the time and since.
  Please note that the documents are withdrawn from public view for a short time during the winter months for conservation, so please check with the Learning Team prior to booking to avoid disappointment!
• Baron’s Shield Making – make your own copy of one of the 25 Baron’s shields to take away with you. This activity is paired with the Medieval Charters session.
• Magna Carta Drama –  Take part in our costumed drama designed to give life to the dramatic events of the reign of King John and demonstrate the significance of Magna Carta
