Lincoln Castle has one of the four original copies of Magna Carta from 1215 in the vault and workshops set the context and explore the decisions that King John faced at the time. You may also wish to focus on the effects of Magna Carta and the Second Battle of Lincoln of 1217. This battle occurred here at Lincoln Castle and is essential in understanding the events surrounding Magna Carta.
The King John Drama is designed to give life to the dramatic events of the reign of King John and demonstrate the significance of Magna Carta (there are two versions of the play for Key Stage 2; one for years 3& 4 and one for years 5&6). It deals with the causes of the revolt, why the Magna Carta was written and what happened immediately after.
Workshop options to choose from are:
Vault: Magna Carta Vault visit and view the cinematic films
Seal: writing in the same style as the Magna Carta ‘parchment’ with real wax seal
Manga Carta role play: a drama about the events 1215-17
Tour: Medieval Castle and 1217 Castle Wall Tour highlighting the vents that happened at the Castle that shaped English history
Shields: the pupils learn about the various heraldic symbols on the shields used by the key players involved in the story of the Magna Carta and the 1217 battle
The David Ross Magna Carta Vault contains the Magna Carta and the Charter of the Forest. Please note that the documents are occasionally withdrawn from public view for a short time during the winter months for conservation, so please check with the Learning Team prior to booking in order not to miss them!
